HOMESPUN MONTESSORI- A Senior Thesis Project

Hilda Rothschild Foundation, by Emma Fullinwider

April 18, 2011

Last summer, Sofia Weir and I volunteered together at the Hilda Rothschild Foundation School in a small village outside of San Salvador, El Salvador. Last fall, we returned to school to start our last year of high school. At our school, the seniors are required to complete a yearlong project in order to graduate. Sofia and I had such a great experience working at the Hilda Rothschild Foundation because it is a Montessori school. (Check out the classroom resources that Sofia and I have posted. They give a brief overview of the Montessori style of teaching, if you are unfamiliar with it.) We both had attended Montessori elementary and middle schools. Me Hace Falta...("I Miss...")

Hilda Rothschild Foundation, by Sofia Weir

August 30, 2010

What we miss most are the school children's smiling faces. So many smiles are harder to find here-- these children were entertained by almost everything, and very easily filled with joy.We saw unbelievable strength of character and courage in the women working at the Hilda Rothschild Foundation. Everyday we tried (and still try) to draw inspiration from such positivity.

Nonetheless over the past couple of weeks we've seen immense amounts of improvement, from the teachers and students alike.Upon our arrival, we were suprised to see how damaged the materials in the classrooms were- before we left Dallas we were worried some materials would be too worn, but the...

Student Doing Montessori Color Exercise

Hilda Rothschild Foundation, by Emma Fullinwider

July 26, 2010

This is one of the Montessori materials donated by East Dallas Community School. The students in the 3-6 year classroom really love this material. This sensorial exercise helps the child develop hand-eye coordination and recognition of color and shade progression.
