Frontier
Brunswick, USA
Frontier is a vision inspired by founder Michael Gilroy's travels as an expedition leader around the world. Gilroy's passion for connecting people with experiences that provoke a sense of discovery compelled him to create a special kind of meeting place reminiscent of a traveler's crossroads – where stories, ideas and culture interact in a rich and dynamic environment.
It is Frontier's belief that stories are the lifeblood of a people – they expose the essence of a culture and provide for a shared identity. Stories are shared at home, work, in town halls and in places of worship. They are shared in the markets, public squares and around the table. And they are shared in cafes and taverns, theatres and cinemas. In all cultures, stories are shared in the "meeting places". These places become the reference points for communities, and serve as vital conduits for the exchange of thoughts and ideas.
In 2004, we began transforming Mill 3 of Fort Andross to become one of these community reference points. After a protracted start-up phase, wrought with blood, sweat and tears (literally & figuratively), Frontier opened it's doors in October 2006 and has since rooted itself in Maine as a unique destination where people can gather around stories, and explore food, film, music and art inspired by the world. We now want to offer more...

Current Projects
Morning Storytelling: Join us once a month with your little one for inspiring world music and stories with Janice O'Rourke - an actress, singer/songwriter and mom of two small boys. She has a passion for stories and songs that teach us about culture, language, and community from all parts of the world. Come in with your kids and 'go beyond.' This program is best suited for children six and under.
The Children's Hour: In collaboration with Cornerstones of Science, an award-winning national science literacy initiative, join us monthly as we connect children to science and technology through interactive books, programs and opportunities that further community involvement.
Photo Pals: teaches children technical photography skills, and enables participating students to use compact digital cameras to explore their lives at school, in their homes, and within their community. Students are encouraged to see their world in new ways, to develop their own photographic style, and to reflect on how their images are meaningful to them. Students share their images and reflections with their fellow classmates, their home community, and communities located around the world.
By sharing their images and values, PhotoPals students may gain a greater sense of place within their home community and develop cross-cultural connections with students their own age in communities around the world. These exchanges also provide an excellent opportunity for students to practice their non-native language speaking, writing, and reading skills.
