Mission Statement

Deep Jyoti was founded in early 2010 by Chandan Kumar. Deep Jyoti translates to ray of light in English. We hopes that the education and public health help we provide will be a ray of light in the lives of our children. The vast majority of our children are anemic and underweight for their age. The incidence of water related illnesses is extremely high and proper sanitation is virtually non-existant. Over 90% of our students come from families without toilets in their homes. Out door defication is common practice and is the cause of many health and social problems.

Accommodation Info

Volunteers can stay at Deep Jyoti for a small fee of $20 per week. This includes 3 meals per day and a place to sleep.

1) Free before and after school tutoring sessions - This is our flagship program. We currently have 4 teachers for 250 students. We are looking for more teachers. We provide our students with free school supplies every month. Our tutoring center is open to children from families of all caste
(read more)1) Free before and after school tutoring sessions - This is our flagship program. We currently have 4 teachers for 250 students. We are looking for more teachers. We provide our students with free school supplies every month. Our tutoring center is open to children from families of all caste and religious backgrounds.2) Toilets for families - Over 90% of the students at our center come from families with no toilets. This is not only a huge inconvenience since women and children are forced to go to the fields either before sun up or after sun down, but is the cause of many illnesses. Our goal is to provide all of the families of our children with toilets.3) Nutrition center for kids - The vast majority of our kids are underweight for their age. This is because their families do not have enough money to provide them with proper food every day. Children are only eating fruit once a year; during mango season which lasts for 2 months. They are not getting enough protein or vegetables either. Most students are anemic and this hinders proper long term development.4) Clean water for families - Water born illnesses are extremely common in Sukhpur. Over 443 million school days are lost each year world wide due to sickness resulting from dirty water. If our kids are not healthy, how can we expect them to go to school and be successful. We hope to provide all of our families with clean water so that their kids are immune to water related disease.5) Skills Training Center - Many of the women in Sukhpur have no formal education and are not working. Though they want to help their families earn money, they are not able to. We want to start a skills training center where we would teach women some basic skills such as stitching. Our hope is that we would empower the local women by teaching them how to stitch. They could then sell their products and help their families by making extra money.6) Computer Center - In today's world, it is imperative that children learn how to use computers. In order to be successful in school and to better your chances of getting a job, being adept with computers is essential. We hope to build a small computer center where our students can come learn typing, the basics of Microsoft Office, and how to use the internet.rn
