Volunteering at Parijat with the parijats (heavenly flowers)

Parijat Academy, by Dulan Boruah

May 18, 2012

Dear all,            ` Heavenly flowers' as the name Parijat suggests, truly children are flowers Mother Nature has created in this Earth. Their smiles reflect the purity of human soul, happiness human have got. They play, run, they may fall and cry, but after a few moments they get up & forget that they were hurt. There are many things that  adult may learn from these kids.        After getting a confirmation call from Uttam Teron,  the founder,  the soul of Parijat Academy. I was very excited to come to Parijat Academy, as it would be the first experience as a Volunteer in a school. I started to plan my stay, confusion started hovering in my mind, “ Will I be able to...

Namaskar!  I know I said that I would update some stories over the break, but I got wrapped up in celebrating Bihu and adventuring around Assam. I apologize for the late update.  It’s always difficult for me to sit down and actually gather all of my thoughts and express them into words…I’m a bit A.D.D, so I will try my best. Hah! Recently I have been receiving e-mails from potential volunteers and one of the most common questions I get is “What do you do when you are not teaching?”  Today I will talk about some of the highlights of my holiday and what I’ve been up to the past few days.As I’ve mentioned before, it is now the time of year for the Rongali Bihu festival.  The festival is...

Right now we are having a holiday called “Bihu” and we will not have classes again until Monday. The next few days I will be partaking in some culture activities and I will have some extra time to update my experiences.First, I will say that this experience has been quite the challenge for me. I am currently the only volunteer here and sometimes it can be overwhelming for me because I have never volunteered solo before. However, this is a great learning opportunity and it has really pushed me to put more effort into connecting with people around me. Uttam and his family have been fantastic! They treat me like I...

Parijat Academy rendering yeoman’s serviceStaff reporter GUWAHATI,  – Located on the outskirts of the capital city, a school with a difference has been rendering yeoman’s service to the community since its establishment and now it has taken another step towards making the poor tribal women self sufficient.Parijat Academy, the school extending free education to the children of poverty struck families in Pamohi has decided to extend and upgrade its existing weaving centre to generate income for the tribal women in the locality. It needs to be mentioned here that Pamohi dominated by a sizeable section of tribal people lacks adequate income generating avenues. Most of the tribal people earn their livelihood by working in the fields, as daily wage labour or as wood cutter.Founder of the school, Uttam Teron informed that...

Surya  Pratap DekaWroteUttam Teron – a daredevil dreamer and symbol of HopeWhat can you do with just 800 rupees, a college degree and a great will to serve? Well, with exactly as much resource Uttam Teron  decided to start a school with just four kids in a cow shed which today is a lovely institution of hope and joy to some of the most interior tribal villages in the Assam Meghalaya border. What’s more, he has even started a micro credit revolution in these forests for providing economic self reliance so that the children in the families are free to go to school.Such is the saga of a nondescript locality and a humble youth that faith in goodness and human endeavour is established once more. About  Parijat  Academy: a  school  for  the underprivileged  childrenPamohi, P.O.  Garchuk, Guwahati-781035, Assam, Indiaemail:  parijatacademy03@yahoo.com " The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others " or ordinary people, the pragmatic approach to life is to engage in such activities which are financially productive. But then again, there are some who believe that there is a bigger mission in life than to pursue insignificant material benefits for self. Such people make a mark in society so significant and revered; it makes us sit back and realize our lesser existence. Shri Uttam Teron, a 30-something young man hails from a village called Pamohi, some 20 kms from Guwahati, a small Karbi-dominated hamlet, where most people live a hand-to-mouth existence. Teron observed that most children either helped augment the...

My volunteering teaching at Parijat Academy

Parijat Academy, by

August 17, 2010 | 1 comment

My volunteering teaching at Parijat Academy   There are only a few moments in life when we actually get the time for ourselves and even fewer moments when we get to do something for others. The thought of doing something for issues not directly related to one’s own self or loved ones is itself beautiful and rare.  As such, given an opportunity to serve the needy or work selflessly towards the betterment of the society should play a vital role in everyone’s lives.  Only then we can be truly a part of a human culture. Social work had always been on my mind. After doing a paper in Indian economic development in my second year of graduation, I got to know a lot about what is actually going on in...

Uttam is superb at organizing and keeping in touch.

Turning on a light bulb!

Posted by Satyajit Nath

Overall experience

5

I have visited the school several times since 2006 and have had the occasion to work closely with the founder, Uttam Teron, other teachers, and the students, for some key infrastructure needs for the school as well in implementing some student development activities. I have enjoyed every moment of interaction with the people at Parijat.

Do you feel you made a difference?

5

Yes. Through my work in Asha for Education, I was able to help with needed funds for classroom construction necessary for the school to offer classes 9 and 10 (http://www.ashanet.org/projects/project-view.php?p=881 for more details). For student development, I was very happy to work with the students of class 9 in the school in 2009 and again in 2010 to start Junior Achievement's workforce readiness training, Careers with a Purpose. Driving these projects and other on-going efforts since have given me the sense that I have made a difference at the school.

Organization and communication

5

Uttam Teron does a great job representing the school and its needs in communication. The school blog is also a good source.

Accommodations

5

While I have not stayed at Parijat overnight, the school premises are very good and are welcoming for visitors. The Alohi Ghar that was constructed as a guest house for visitors provides even more comfort for volunteers who wish to spend time with Parijat.

Safety

5

The staff and the children ensure that Parijat Academy is a safe and welcoming venue for all volunteers. I have faced no safety issues in any of my visits there.

Picture a summer afternoon three years ago in Pamohi, a sleepy area outside Guwahati. A class of shy 9th graders in Parijat Academy are puzzled by my request to look at the bare light bulb on the wall. I ask them, “Imagine if you had to make such a light bulb. What would you need to know? How would you get started?”. Suddenly, this class of shy boys and girls are involved in frantic whispered conversations among themselves. In the next two hours, they come up with many ideas about how they would build a light bulb and a factory for it. A few students are relieved when they realize that not everyone needs to be a science wizard to contribute to such an endeavor; they could play valuable roles keeping accounts or marketing the products. The children are now hooked on this idea and want to try it out on something else. So, we take on the ceiling fan next and we go through what, until then, was boring science stuff for the kids; things like electromagnetism and copper, sheet metal, magnets and other things needed to build a fan.

The brainstorming technique that I used is based on a program called ‘Careers With a Purpose’ developed by the India chapter of Junior Achievement (www.jaindia.org) that focuses on workplace readiness for students.

It turns out that the students liked this brainstorming session a lot. I didn’t realize how much until later when the school’s principal wrote to me that the children had put together their own chalk pencil production line! When I visited the school next year, they gave me a box of chalk pencils from that project. It is one of the most treasured gifts I have ever received.

This is just one example of the many great volunteering experiences I have had at Parijat over the years.

Overall experience

5

Parijat is a Gandhian School

Do you feel you made a difference?

5

It is not for me to answer this question. It is for Parijat to say.

Organization and communication

5

Uttam Teron is a tireless worker for the betterment of the underprivileged. I have lived with Parijat on 3 occasions and I have personally seen the dedication of Uttam and his family and teachers to the uplift of the children and the parents of the children.

Accommodations

5

I give it 5 stars because it is something that Gandhi would give 5 stars to. When the welfare of others is more important to you than your own welfare, only then can you say that you TRULY love. MK GANDHI

Safety

5

I have always felt very safe.

I began my connection with Parijat in 2007 when a friend of mine from Gujarat referred me to an Article in Outlook magazine about a young man (Uttam Teron) from Pamohi a small village in Assam who had started a School called Parijat Academy (Heavenly Flower) from his family home. I have since then visited Parijat Academy in 2008..2009...2011 and I am intending to visit again in 2012. When I visit I live at Parijat and experience all of the daily actions of the people involved. On my last visit I slept in Uttam,s office and I am therefore able to advise of the L O N G hours that Uttam puts in to bring his dream to a reality.
On all three occasions Uttam and I have conducted many ..Gandhi Peace Walks in various Schools in Assam traveling by Train..Bus and4wheel drive in our goal to raise funds for the underprivileged schools visited.
