A Rough Outline of Class Schedule
Machik, by Peldun Tenzing
August 15, 2011
It is amazing to see how much of a difference just 15 days of English can make. In my class I encourage students to participate and speak in English, no matter how challenging it might be for them. And to create a light and fun atmosphere I make a fool of myself and encourage students to do so, if that is what it will take for them to get their point across. It has been a little over a week since I got a new co-teacher. Wang is a rising high-school senior at an international school in Shanghai. Sometimes Wang will translate instructions and grammar rules into Chinese if the students have trouble understanding. Our classes are scheduled to last an hour and 30 mins. but we usually end...
Relocated to Shangri-la!

Although it was a lot of work and required immense organization, I am happy that our program got relocated to Shangri-la. Gyathang was named Shangrila in 2006 and is a large tourist destination. We were forced to relocate because the school hosting the program was undergoing a large renovation which would cut the school's electricity and water supply. We had to move because we could not function under such conditions. Relocation required a lot of organization, as we were taking about 70 students with us for a two-day long trip from Sichuan province to Yunan Province. We went on a 17 hour long train ride and then rented two busses for another 10 hour long ride. Although it was stressful and interrupted our program, I...
Finally in Chengdu!

I arrived in Chengdu on the 20th from Delhi. Coming from Delhi, I was well prepared for the heat and intense humidity. The volunteers (teachers) spent the first two days getting to know each other and shopping around Chengdu for materials for Hongbo, where the classes will take place. I really enjoyed meeting and getting to know the volunteers. We have students from China, US, Canada and the Tibetan regions volunteering. I especially enjoyed meeting the Tibetan volunteers. We clicked from the get go and hung out for the rest of our time in Chengdu together. I am really looking forward to spending more time with them and learning about them. It is also quite intersting to be exposed to all the different Tibetan dialects and having to learn and...
Arriving in Chengdu
Machik, by Evan Zwisler
July 12, 2011
I arrived in Chengdu today and began my work with the Machik program. I checked into the hostel I was staying at and had a walk around the city. I was going out to eat later so I decided to just have a look around. Chengdu is a living, breathing city wiht a pulse you can feel. After wandering the streets of Tibet-town I went back to the hostel for a shower and got cleaned up for dinner. I had dinner with two of the people who are helping run the program and some other Tibetans who live in Chengdu. We ate at a Tibetan restaurant. They had lots of mutton and beef, along with tea and some sort of bread dish I couldn't identify. I began talking to them about my work and they...

I am currently in Ladakh, India and have been here for a couple of days now. I left for Delhi from Chicago on the 20th of June and I am now in Ladakh, where my father resides. I am enjoying the escape from the brutal Delhi heat and appreciating the cool Ladakh breeze and bright stars more than ever. This has been a great summer so far and I am even more excited at the thought of what I have ahead of me for the rest of the summer. From July 21st to August 19th I will be volunteering in Chengdu, on the Tibetan plateau, teaching English and PE at a Summer Camp that Machik facilitates. Machik is a very unique organization for it works directly with Tibetans on the Tibetan plateau. I have been working...
