Cost for Volunteers
Local volunteers will not have costs. Volunteers from outside Washington DC will have to fund or help us find hosts to cover room and board. We regret our budget does not allow us to pay for travel, room and board. We will be very happy to assist with finding low cost housing for volunteers in the D.C. area, but this is a challenge. The cost to volunteer with Machik overseas will vary, although volunteers are generally expected to pay travel costs.
Volunteer Placement Logistics
All Applicants
Machik welcomes applications from highly motivated volunteers and interns who are dedicated to community service and committed to grassroots work. If you are interested in becoming involved, please send a resume and cover letter to info@machik.org and tell us why you are interested in working with Machik.
Internship Applicants
Internships are available year round and admission is rolling. Students applying for an internship are required to provide at least one letter of recommendation. Scheduling is flexible, but candidates are expected to commit to regular hours for the agreed duration. Students are responsible for academic credit arrangements if desired and should communicate any relevant requirements when applying. All internships are unpaid, but students are encouraged to search for fellowship or other funding sources through their university career centers.

Volunteer Skills Needed
Machik began as an all-volunteer organization. Dedicated volunteers across the US, Canada and abroad have helped build this work over many years. Our growing network of volunteers plays a vital role in public outreach and fundraising efforts. With the opening of the Machik office in fall 2007, we began the Machik Internship Program and recruited our first round of hardworking students from local area universities.
The community-based model for development makes a wide range of disciplines relevant to Machik programming both in the field and for daily operations in the US. Experience in areas such as international education, community development, conservation, engineering and public health would be especially welcome. We also welcome support in areas such as marketing, graphic design and web development.
