When I signed up to do volunteer work one day after school at La Montana, I had all sorts of great ideas for English lessons I could do with the kids over the time I would be there. Seven weeks later I had done exactly one of those lessons. Most of my weekly time at the center was spent playing Jenga, learning Argentine games and songs, watching the kids play soccer, and drawing pictures. At the center I was reminded of a lesson I learned when I was volunteering in the schools in New London where I went to college. I spent about two months taking Spanish classes at La Montaña Spanish School and had the opportunity to volunteer at an after-school center located on the periphery of San Carlos de Bariloche. The first time I took the bus from the city center up and away from the lake and towards the poorer suburbs of Bariloche, I remember being shocked by how 20 minutes on a bus landed me in such a drastically different environment. Away from the lake and the center of Bariloche, it is no longer easy to forget you are in a country where so many people live in poverty.
