The Jayawickreme Foundation was founded in 2001 as non profitable, non political and non religious charity to help the poorest of the poor to come up in life in the Weligama rural area only. The foundation is a registered and approved charity.

Current Projects

 The Jayawickreme Foundation maintains 3 Education Centers for 650 children as education is the key to a better future for poor children. In the morning the Centres are housing 3 Kindergartens and during the afternoon English and Tamil tuition lessons are given. A library and a huge play ground complete the facilities.

 The Jayawickreme Foundation has a day care centre for 40 poor old people who do not get any pension money.

 The Jayawickreme Foundation’s focus is poverty alleviation in rural Weligama as there are more than 600 families identified who still live in mud and wood huts. The target of the Jayawickreme Foundation is to provide all these families with decent houses. So far 48 have been built. 

 Objectives:

  1)  Education for poor children

  2)  Poverty alleviation

  3)  Care for the elderly

   4) Housing for the rural poor

   5) Livelihood  Projects

   6) Micro Financing Scheme

Financial Needs

  From 2011 a long-term sponsor for the Education Centre in Denipitiya is urgently needed. 450 poor children are educated in this centre. 

Donors to support the day care centre for 40 registered senior citizens are needed.

Donors to continue the rural housing scheme are needed.

 

 

Mission Statement

Poverty Alleviation: help poor people to become independent and self sufficient

 The Jayawickreme Foundation’s objective is to uplift and improve the life of the rural poor, specially the children, in Weligama, Southern Sri Lanka.

Around 8600 families are still living below poverty line in this area. 25% of Sri Lankans do not have the money for their basic needs in 2009 according to the latest figures of the Social Services Ministry.
