Grassroots - Making a Difference in Haiti
Haiti Communitere, by Robin Kenny
April 14, 2011
It was through my friend Nishan that I first learned about disaster relief work. He, in turn, introduced me to Sam Bloch, the founder of Grassroots United – a non-profit organization devoted to helping those in disaster-stricken areas. They shared many stories about their selfless efforts to help people around the world; it was truly inspirational! Although I made it my new goal to join a team onsite, I didn't know when it would be possible for me to do so. But, what I did know is that I was going to make it happen in the near future. This past January, I finally had the resources to help out in Haiti. I was greeted at the airport by Sarah, a wonderful volunteer from Grassroots. During the following five weeks I...
A Letter From Haiti
Haiti Communitere, by carolyn walsh
February 06, 2011
January 2011“I thank you very much.” Softly spoken, a hand gently offered; a shy kiss on my cheek, our eyes meeting, “I thank you very much,” each and every child assured me, one by precious one. Sixteen beautiful, innocent faces, orphaned; now building life as brothers and sisters. A full moon was rising behind them, reflected in the lake below, Mother Nature’s bowl full of nourishment, sitting in the crossed legs of sitting mountains. Here was the polar opposite of the apocalyptic chaos we’d left behind us in Port-au-Prince, left in ruin by the quake; the city of 1.5 million that swelled to over 5 million in just 40 years, now shredded to rubble and useless dust. These were children, I realized, who had seen and felt and survived more...
Ease of mind
Haiti Communitere, by Marcia Tillison

I wanted to take a moment to say with utter gratitude how helpful Omprakash has been in working with GrassRoots United. Family and friends have been able to easily and safely make donations that take less than a week to process, which helps them feel secure enough to recommend the use of Omprakash, which in turns helps GRU.I have committed to at least 6 months here on the ground in Haiti, so that I will be able to fully engage and work on projects that need extra time and attention. I am discovering that it isn't always about the large projects that happen all over the island, but also about those that sit quietly and help to maintain a space for those people to easily return to and continue their...
Introducing GrassRoots Community Health Program
Haiti Communitere, by Delphine Bedu
February 01, 2011
I started translating cholera prevention materials the day the disease was confirmed in the Central Plateau. Since those few fliers were printed has deepened into a long-term community empowerment and public health information program. Not only are there language barriers, but cultural and habitual mores that must be understood in order to help people avoid infection.Initially teams of local and international volunteers were trained on base to give presentations in small, un-served camps. This eventually moved into the more effective practice of training community and camp leaders to give prevention presentations in their circles. The program is constantly being tweaked and updated. To keep people aware and engaged in cholera prevention we are working on more culturally relevant performance-based ways of reaching people. Keep an eye out for videos of...
Volunteer Coordination at GrassRoots United
Haiti Communitere, by Sarah Fiskness
January 31, 2011
This winter I came and joined GrassRoots United (GRU) in Haiti. For some time, I was trying to figure out how I could contribute something to the developing world. After several opportunities fell through I became connected to GRU. Having a background in volunteer training and team leading, I was able to jump right in to the volunteer coordinator role here- a much needed area of administration at the time for this organization. My contribution to volunteer coordination allows experienced and inexperienced individuals to come find a place to give something as well. In addition to this, the former volunteer coordinator of GRU is now able to launch a brand new cholera education program, now that her former responsibilities are taken care of....
