![]() Township Jazz Festival-- Amy Biehl Foundation Facilitator Ensemble The Amy Biehl Foundation hosts the first Township Jazz Festival in Gugulethu, Cape Town, South Africa. Several of the facilitators worked hard to create an ensemble performance which had the crowd on their feet--clapping and cheering them on. | ![]() Prayers of the Children Foundation Phase Kiddos: Every day before the kids received their meal, they prayed twice--once in Xhosa and once in English. Their sweet prayers are enough to melt any heart of stone. | ![]() Eating a Sheep's Ear My first experience dining on the ear of a sheep (part of a smiley) in the township of Gugulethu, Cape Town, South Africa. | ![]() South African Township Student Dancing by Emma Cape | ![]() South Africa Township Student Dancing 2 by Emma Cape | ![]() South African Township Student Marimba Band by Emma Cape | ![]() South Africa Township Student Marimba Band 2 (pt 1) by Emma Cape | ![]() South African Township Primary School Marimba Band -Clip 2 by Emma Cape | Mr and Miss Sinako The winners (center) and runners up of the first annual Mr and Miss Sinako Beauty Pageant held in Nyanga Township, Cape Town. | ![]() Siyazingisa Computer Class Aspirations Here's a sample of my project working with the kiddos from Siyazingisa school in Gugulethu, Cape Town, South Africa. The kids worked hard to prepare their answers and then translate them to a powerpoint presentation. The videos and powerpoints will be complied and sent to a classroom in St Louis, Missouri, USA as we begin to link the classrooms for mutual learning! | School Girls | Mangaliso and Zuko Some of my kids working on their powerpoint presentations to send to their new friends in America. | Siphe and Tumi working on their powerpoint presentation Some of my kids working on their powerpoint presentations to send to their new friends in America. | Mangaliso and Zuko Some of my kids working on their powerpoint presentations to send to their new friends in America. | Giggle Girls Some of my kids working on their powerpoint presentations to send to their new friends in America. | Introspective Some of my kids working on their powerpoint presentations to send to their new friends in America. | Power | Staff Shot! Here you can actually see some stand alone houses. In many parts of the township, residents live in interconnected shacks of sheet metal and scrap wood. | Rugby Even in 35 degree heat (95 degrees Fahrenheit), this adorable little guy was intent on playing outside. | Cape Town Station Situated just above the train station and beside the bus depot, the minibus taxi hub is always buzzing, especially during rush hours. There are many lines that can take one all around the Cape Town area. That said, it is ill-advised for visitors to take minibus taxis after dark. | Mowbray Golf Club The Golf Club, about 20 minutes outside Cape Town, offers a beautiful view of Table Mountain. | Uncooked Sheep's Heads A crate of sheep's heads. These have had their hair burned off, but have not yet been split or cooked. Each costs just 36 Rand (approximately 4.50 USD). | Devoured Sheep's Head Sheep's head is considered a delicacy in the townships of South Africa. Though I probably wouldn't eat it again, I'm definitely glad I tried it. As you can see, nothing was left but bone. |
