The Dalai Lama often talks about *not wasting time*

February 03, 2012

Educational Support Tibet, India

As one might expect, minutes before I taught my first English class at ES Tibet, looking out onto ten, young, eager Tibetan adults, I was feeling a bit nervous. I whispered this to a student who was sitting next to me as we waited for class to begin. He reached for my hand and said, "Please don't be nervous. You are our family now. " Since this first day, my husband and I have been enfolded in the connectedness, welcoming, and belonging which emanates from the family of students, teachers, cook, and manager within the Education School of Tibet. The students' genuine smiles, contagious laughter, the sweet singing of stirring Tibetan melodies coming from the kitchen while the cookprepares breakfast, young people walking on the roof early in the morning reading...

My first impression - E.S. Tibet

February 03, 2012

Educational Support Tibet, India

My overnight bus from Delhi arrived in Dharamsala quite late, according to the timetable, and by the time my motorbike lift from one of the school's staff got me to Upper Sukker it was already breakfast time. I was immediately struck by how quickly and politely the students made a place for me at the table, and made me welcome, asking about my journey and where I was from.I have spent a lot of time trying to teach young people who are not particularly motivated to learn, or who have very real problems with learning the English language, not all of their own making, it has to be said. But from the very beginning, I was struck by just how motivated and dedicated to their studies the young people who...

Leopard Encounter

February 03, 2012

Daktari Bush School and Wildlife Orphanage, South Africa

We had a VERY exciting day at Daktari. Our awesome vet, Peter Rogers, came by to do a check-up on our leopard, Shiloweni, and make sure he's doing ok. While he was sleeping, the volunteers quickly cleaned up his camp... 2 years worth of impala bones were removed with military precision! Everything went to plan, all the volunteers got a chance to touch Shiloweni and get their picture taken with him. I took the children to the viewing deck to watch the proceedings, and when we were given the all-clear I took them into the camp, they were soo excited to be near to and touch a leopard! One of the kids said, "At first I was scared... but he was so beautiful!" Shiloweni is in excellent health and now has a...

Cite Soleil Eiffel Tower Project

January 31, 2012

Haiti Communitere, Haiti

A social movement is quietly underway in the notorious slum of Cite Soleil. This movement, known as Konbit Soley Leve (Rising Sun Collective), began 8 months ago with the vision to mobilize Cite Soleil residents to change the image and reality of life in the Cite using their own resources. The greatest resource in Cite Soleil is, no doubt, human energy, and they have indeed put it to work. The movement began with a voluntary street-cleaning campaign. With what little tools and materials they had, groups of people all across Cite Soleil began picking up garbage and creating their own trash cans out of used buckets, bottles and old television sets. The beautification then developed further into the whitewashing and painting of houses, the planting of trees and flowers and the...

Thoughts on Future of Helping Hands Pharmacy

January 28, 2012

Helping Hands Pharmacy, Peru

In the summer of 2010, Mike Barish, Mario Diaz Ugarte, and I had the privilege of starting a non-profit pharmacy with funding from the Davis Projects for Peace Grant. We called our initiative ‘Prescriptions for Peace” and we hoped to establish a sustainable venture to combat the healthcare epidemic in Cusco. Almost two years later, the Prescriptions for Peace Project is still going strong. While we have accomplished some great things recently, I can start to see the cards really beginning to fall into place. This summer Mike and I are returning to Cusco and plan on hosting many volunteers. Our goals include the continuation and expansion of recent medical campaigns, forming a strong and productive partnership with the municipality of San Sebastian, and expanding the business operations of the...

Individual life story before E.S. Tibet

January 27, 2012

Educational Support Tibet, India

After catnapping on the overnight bus from Delhi, I woke as the sun was beginning to rise to a magnificent view of a fast flowing river, mountains and green, green valleys. It was my first visit to the Indian State of Hamachal Pradesh. As the bus coasted along, I wondered what my time as a volunteer at E.S. Tibet in Dharamshala would bring. An hour or so later, I was at the gates of the school and warmly welcomed by the School Manager, Choephel. Tibetan flags fluttering in the breeze had an immediate impact and I knew I was going to enjoy this unique experience. After an orientation tour of the school, I met the other volunteers Arnrid and Karmo who were here like I was, to teach English to 23...

The Most Special Place I Have Ever Been To In My Life

January 27, 2012

Educational Support Tibet, India

Being a former student ( who graduated two months ago ) of E.S-Tibet, I'm very privileged to get this wonderful opportunity to be a volunteer in this school, where I have been educated morally as well as literally; brought up with great care and love; and where my mind has got enlighten and my heart has felt something. Thanks for E.S-Tibet and the members of this homely school, I have learnt a lot of valuable things ( like tolerance, how to deal with different personalities, how to satisfy with the things I have, the importance of self-responsibility, how not to take everything as granted, etc ) both when I was a student and especially when I am a teacher for those lovely students.I have been to the schools since I...

Thanks E.S. Tibet

January 27, 2012

Educational Support Tibet, India

I have really enjoyed teaching here. The students are very friendly, warm and great fun! They have a real enthusiasm to learn English and they are very conscientious. They are such a pleasure to teach. The resources are varied which are a great help in lesson planning and I have received positive support from our Manager and the other volunteer teachers. I am very pleased with my single room which overlooks the mountains. The view is beautiful. It is so peaceful here. You really feel that you are immersed with nature as there is a lovely river flowing nearby. The walks and hikes are incredibly breathtaking. The local people are also very friendly. We are near some very interesting places to visit such as the Dalai Lama’s residence in Mcleod...

I felt like part of the family

January 27, 2012

Educational Support Tibet, India

With less than 2 weeks left at E.S.T I've been asked to write a paragraph summarizing my experience. Words like "awesome" and "amazing" are among the many adjectives that seem too inadequate for this task. I've been calling E.S.T home for the past two months and not once since I stepped off the bus in Dharamsala have I doubted my decision to come here. Even faced with the major possibility of culture shock that a country like India might present to some foreigners, it didn't take very long to feel completely at ease amongst the students who also consider E.S.T home. And while there were adjustments to be made, i.e. washing in a spring, doing laundry by hand (I'm embarrassed to admit that I had to ask for help with...
