Home Sweet Home print story

I am finally back in the US after my two month trip to India! One of my favorite bands is called The Evens. The singer, Ian Mckaye, starts out the second album by singing, "Cut from the cloth and cut quite severely. Is this my world I no longer recognize?" Being back, I definitely am feeling that sense of not belonging.

At any rate, my work in India is going very well! The progress on the kitchen has surpassed my expectation by light years, so I am extremely excited about that. Construction will be starting in a couple of weeks. We are hopeful that it will be done by January or February. I will return to India at that point and see the doors open to refugees! I am also working with my good friend Sarah Walker from the University of Brighton. We are trying to design a health and nutrition curriculum that will be taught during the English classes. We don't only want to serve cheap healthy meals; we want to affect long lasting change. We hope to accomplish this by educating the refugee population in how to eat healthy.

I am also now working closesly with another Omprakash partner called Project Why. I am working with one of their branches in a rural village in the northeastern state of Bihar. I have never been to a place where poverty is more apparent. This village is in desperate need for public health work. We are going to try to implement a nutrition center, build toilets for the village families, and develop a clean water system. I am extremely excited to start this new project and will be providing more news soon!

I am happy to be back but at the same time miss where I was. But I have reason to go back, and I am very happy about that.
