A Piggy House!!!

May 26, 2011

Daktari Bush School and Wildlife Orphanage, South Africa

A little piglet is supposed to bring you luck! But sometimes the piggy itself gets lucky. When Ian and Michele returned from a trip to Nelspruit, our two Warthogs got a big souvenir. A Piggy-House!!!This spacious 1-Room-Appartment found its place next to the enclosed fireplace, which keeps the water hot in the room at Chalet number 1. So the cold winter evenings turn into cuddly warm ones for them. Pigs in Luck! Thanks to Gilly who is the generous sponsor of Samantha and Miranda. By the way… As the “apartment” is situated next to the gate, Daktari has now Watch-Pigs. Burglars be aware!

La Peña's First Voluntaria

May 25, 2011

Lifting La Peña , El Salvador

Nora arrived in El Salvador in the middle of September with no concrete plans except to take a flight back to Boston on December 15th. Little did La Peña know, but it had its first real Lifting La Peña volunteer.El Salvador is a country that has yet to be touched by the Midas fingers that guide tourism in Central American countries such as Belize, Guatemala, Costa Rica, and Nicaragua. There are bubbles of passer-bys but for the most part the Salvadoran community is largely unfamiliar with Americans on a daily basis. On top of that La Peña is a community that is ‘bien retirado’ – that is to say it is very out in the middle of nowhere, end of the road, quiet and calm.So when Nora arrived in La...

Parijat Academy, India

From Tehelka Magazine, Vol 8, Issue 6, Dated February 12, 2011 CURRENT AFFAIRS INSPIRATIONS  Pamohi, AssamUttam Teron, 35Tribal EducatorBY RATNADIP CHOUDHURYPHOTO: ANJANA DUTTAUntil eight years ago, education was an alien concept for the tribal kids of Pamohi village near Guwahati. Now, they aren’t afraid of reaching for the sky, thanks to Uttam Teron. “The men in the village used to work in a stone quarry and the women sold rice beer. Earning two square meals was such a challenge that educating their children was a distant dream,” recalls Teron. So, the tribal graduate started the Parijat Academy in a cowshed with four students in 2003. Now it has more than 500 students, all getting free education. This year, the first batch will appear for matriculation exams. “I had to try...

Getting to know Omprakash

May 20, 2011

European Disaster Volunteers, Philippines

When we founded our charity, European Disaster Volunteers (EDV), we knew that volunteers would be an essential part of EDV’s success. After all, everyone who founded EDV has, at some point, been a volunteer. Our Executive Director, Andy Chaggar, spent more than a year volunteering in Thailand after the 2004 Asian tsunami nearly took his life. He then went on to get his Master’s degree in the field before volunteering in Peru for a further eight months. Our Media and Marketing Director thought she would travel for about a month after graduating from college, and instead found herself living and volunteering in the city of Pisco, Peru for more than nine months following a devastating earthquake. Our Volunteer Resource Director, Sarah Hughes, also worked with our founding members in Thailand...

Ready, Set, Clean!

May 19, 2011

Abriendo Mentes, Costa Rica

Ever since the rush of tourist traffic during Semana Santa, Potrero hasn’t looked quite like itself. The endless stream of families, campers, and day trippers brought copious amounts of trash that now line the streets and beaches of our beloved village. The tourists typically bring the majority of their food, drink, and accommodations (i.e. a tent) from home, leaving Playa Potrero with little income from the rush of revelers, and a massive amount of rubbish. To combat this annual problem, AM organized a Potrero Pick-Up day with the students to help beautify the area and spread awareness about proper garbage management. The participating students and volunteers divided into groups, and set out to eradicate the relentless rubbish. Meradith took every opportunity to teach the kids much needed lessons such as, “burning...

MY STORYGarvin Brown ( Queensland, Australia)My name is Garvin Brown and I was born on the 9th of May 1928 in Wanganui, New Zealand. In around 1932 we moved onto a small dairy farm in a place called kohi leased to my father for probably minimum cost because he had served overseas in the New Zealand army for over 4 years during what is called the First World War. He also served in Gallipoli. The years we spent on this farm were very happy days for me as I had a small pony and lots of love. This period was during the great depression which swept the world in 1929. My father worked very hard on our farm as it had been in a very run down position when we moved on...
