In June, 2007, we donated $5,010 to support some of RAWA's education initiatives in Pakistan and Afghanistan.  In an attempt to make our foundation as transparent as possible, we have included below the details of how these funds will be used.

$3,160 will pay for one year's stationery and reference books for the 445 children at RAWA's nine orphanages in Pakistan and Afghanistan, and $1,850 will buy one year's worth of stationery, reference books, and textbooks for 58 students at RAWA's school for Afghan refugees in Peshawar, Pakistan.

One of the successful projects we had so far was the orphanages program. Since its inception in 1977, RAWA's top priority was to help the orphans and poor children by providing them shelter and education. Our martyred founding leader, Meena opened the first orphanage with over 500 children in early 80s in Quetta (Pakistan) when millions of Afghan were fleeing Afghanistan to escape the Russian agression.

We have helped and educated thousands of children, mostly orphans through out these years. We have tried to help these children grow up as modern and civilized human beings that could play positive role in the reconstruction of their country. I strongly recommend you to read this article about RAWA orphanages:http://www.rawa.org/orphanages.htm and please view the related slide show on our website:http://www.rawa.org/orphanage.htm .

Dear Willy,

Sorry for the delayed reply.

We have 5 orphanages in Pakistan and four in Afghanistan. The 'reference books' are those books which the students will use for their research, assignment or projects. Most of the text books provided by school are not rich enough in content and many students are interested to study more on specific topics.

Our school in refugee camp is for all students who live either with their families in the refugee camps or in RAWA hostel. All the students are Afghan refugee and majority of them belong to extremely poor backgrounds whose fathers go daily to the near by cities to do harsh jobs for a low income. Those students who live in the hostel are mostly orphan or belong to families that can't afford to feed them, therefore, as compare to other students they deserve more attention and help.

As the amount of your contribution is less than a price of a vehicle for the orphanage, we want this money goes to the stationary of the orphanages and the hostel.

We will definitely send you the photos of the children with the items we purchased by your fund.

Best regards,

Andeisha
