Currently interning at the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting, at heart and variously in the past and near future I am a visual journalist, captivated by the rich tapestry of human life and the grit and grace of our shared experience.
I am committed to a reporting that includes the lyrical nuances of the everyday, the voices of the silenced or ignored, rigorous honesty and—most importantly—overflowing empathy. The intimacy and openness subjects grant a photographer are astonishing gifts, and the exchange is one I feel incredibly lucky to partake in.
As a freelance multimedia journalist, I collaborated on an award-winning investigative package on migrant workers in Wisconsin’s dairy industry for the Wisconsin Center for Investigative Journalism. While studying abroad in Kenya, I first came to know the challenges women face in Kibera while working at an all girls high school. I’ve since returned to Kibera twice.
I currently work as the Director of Technology and Media Production for KGSA Foundation.
Skills
My training as a journalist has instilled in me the power of the story, of sharing in the truth of another’s life. Specifically, my experiences as photo editor and freelance photographer for a number of local newspapers and magazines and my documentary work (both in photography and video) at KGSA have cemented these skills. My work can be seen at http://www.jakenaughton.com and http://vimeo.com/jakenaughton.
Additionally, I worked as a project coordinator for KGSA's journalism club, organizing and motivate 20ish members to produce photography and video content for upload to the Geo-Girls, a citizen journalism project involving girls’ clubs around the world. I taught members the principles and practices of good journalism and how to use still and video cameras.
Now, I work as the Media and Technology Director of KGSA Foundation, coordinating the school's online presence using Facebook, Twitter, blogs and online networking. I manage volunteer communication, brainstorm projects and develop strategic planning with other board members. Finally, I identify technologies that will benefit operations on the ground and help them get to the school.
