Abriendo Mentes May 01, 2011 - August 01, 2011
I am currently interning with Abriendo Mentes in Playa Potrero, Guanacaste, Costa Rica. I'm staying here for 3 months, and believe that I will be able to accomplish a lot. The organization is great and has achieved so much thus far. What I'm personally working on is the organization of the adult ESOL curriculum, teaching the adult ESOL classes, interviewing community members about their perceptions on education and Abriendo Mentes, as well as interviewing women about their interest in a women's empowerment group. I have had a lot of fun thus far getting to know the people here, as well as working with the other volunteers in the organization.
Skills
My skills are centered around interpersonal communication and teaching. I am a social person, and am able to put people at ease quickly, allowing me to form strong relationships with different types of people. I have ample experience interviewing and doing on the ground type of research. I am also ESL certified, and have ESOL to latino adult immigrants in Providence for 3 years now. I have also taught an English literature course to middle schoolers, and I volunteer with an Eritrean refugee family in Providence as well.
