Thank you for your interest in our 2027 Global Social Impact Internships program! 

This program helps students earn academic credit while pursuing independent social impact internships in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. Internship fields include health, engineering, education, human rights, sustainability, and gender-based advocacy.

Alongside your internship, you will engage in critical dialogue and reflection about the complexities of striving for justice while crossing differences of culture and power, and you will create a series of digital storytelling posts that document your experiences through lenses informed by our course themes.

Please register below to initiate your enrollment in this program. The program registration deadline is February 1, 2027, but please don't delay! The earlier you enroll, the easier it'll be for you to secure an internship.

 

What Is This?

Omprakash is a US-based global education nonprofit that has partnered with University of Michigan to create this program.

This program will help you:

  • Independently apply for and secure social impact internships with vetted, locally-led "Omprakash Partners" in Asia, Africa, and Latin America;
  • Access interdisciplinary curriculum, mentorship, and peer support to enrich your global learning and professional development;
  • Build a digital portfolio to showcase your experience for future employers and graduate schools;
  • Earn 3 or 6 academic credits alongside your internship experience.

This program is open to all undergraduate University of Michigan students, regardless of their field or topic of interest.

Official program dates are May 11 - August 17th, 2027; internships will take place between June 1 - July 31st, 2027.

 

How Does It Work?

 

 

This program combines independent social impact internships with a shared structure for mentorship, reflection, and digital storytelling.

Here's how it works:

As soon as possible:

1. Register below to get started!
2. Browse and apply for internships with approved Omprakash Partners.

By February 1, 2027:

3. Confirm your internship and your program registration with University of Michigan.

By March 1, 2027:

 4. Apply for funding from University of Michigan, if applicable. 

During Summer 2027:

5. Participate in your internship, engage in online learning and reflection alongside peers & EdGE Mentors, and build a Digital Portfolio documenting your experience.

Here are some other key details:

  • Program Dates: Students participating in this program will engage in a Community Engagement Seminar course on Omprakash EdGE between Tuesday, May 11 to Tuesday, August 17, 2027 — your learning in the classroom will begin before you depart for your internship abroad, and continue during and after you end your internship as well.
  • Academic Credit and Hours of Commitment: Students can choose to earn either 3 or 6 academic credits from University of Michigan by participating in this program. In addition to your internship work, your time in this program will be divided between asynchronous engagement in our EdGE online classroom, creating digital storytelling posts to document your internship experience, and reflecting with peers in a series of Zoom-based Live Sessions hosted by the Omprakash team.  
  • Program Cost and Funding Opportunities: The total cost of the program is $750 for 3 credits and $1250 for 6 credits, plus the cost of travel and daily expenses (which are variable by location). All program participants are eligible to apply for full-funding via CGIS.

Omprakash curates a network of 220+ social change organizations in over 50 countries, and provides a platform through which students independently connect with these organizations and apply for internships.

Why Join This Program?
 

I'm a pre-med student interested in the human condition, and working towards understanding it through research, education, and advocacy. In simpler terms, a lot of the work I aspire to do (even in healthcare) is rooted in learning and working with people's stories – because that's one of the ways people have inherently bonded time and time again. Omprakash felt like the right 'next step', because it was an ethical avenue to ask the same questions of social impact that I'd been looking to answer on my own.

I'm currently an editorial/archive intern at [an Omprakash Partner in India]. I'd describe it as a safe-space and resource for South Asian, LGBTQ individuals trying to find a community that they can relate their stories, struggles and dreams to. A lot of the dialogue I've seen in our projects come from people from different backgrounds and perspectives, and it's done so much to broaden others' (and my own) horizons of understanding. That type of grassroots impact is inspiring to see firsthand, and I look forward to the rest of my journey!
